Broadcast engineering Radio automation Sound reinforcement  News

Westcountry Broadcast can provide you with a background audio or sound reinforcement system. These systems are often referred to as PA or public address systems but that name tends to convey a fairly restrictive impression of what these systems can do for you. We have installed systems in a variety of locations for a variety of purposes.

In store promotions and brand reinforcement are vital in the modern marketplace. For large multi-site retailers like supermarkets, we have the perfect solution for providing in store music and promotional material. Many stores outsource this provision but are then limited as to how flexible the scheduling of promotional audio can be and how quickly they can react. Having an in house system from Westcountry Broadcast, based on the BMS distributed audio platform from Autoplus means that you can determine your playout policy centrally, allow for local changes and react quickly.

Whilst large supermarket chains may have their own satellite distributed radio stations for this purpose, we can use BMS to play-out background music interspersed with your pre-programmed choice of trailers, adverts and promotional information to feed in store music systems. This subliminal advertising can be very effective and our system is cheaper than running your own radio station!

Systems can be designed for modest cost. Systems can also be integrated with telephone systems to allow paging in large areas and if installed to the appropriate specification can be used for emergency procedures such as fire escape advice etc.

We have installed a system in a BMW car showroom to provide low level background music. Clearly a BMW showroom has pre-requisites of good audio quality and stylish and unobtrusive appearance - ceiling speakers achieve this. We have provided zoned volume control for the sub showroom area for New Mini. (2002). There is much interest in providing discreet background audio in car showrooms and we have recently completed a group of Toyota showrooms (2005).

An installation at a brand new High Street fashion store saw us set up a two zone system where there was no physical boundary between zones. The large store was actually two brands within one store but apart from physical location, there was no boundary between them. Therefore careful acoustic engineering was required to achieve the effect especially as the customer specified "very loud" as their required level! TOA speakers and ADS amplification fitted the bill. (2003)

A new restaurant has opened in a grade 1 listed building. We have provided the background audio system with the requisite zoned volume control. Naturally aesthetics were critical with the installation having to be sympathetic to the historic building.

Creative speaker placement achieved a visually unobtrusive installation with excellent audio coverage with an even level.

We can also zone speakers in a building. A further education college built a large new teaching and restaurant block and we installed a system which allows different areas to independently control volume level and their audio source but also for all areas to have a common source. In this case one of the sources is the media studies department's radio studios. (2003)

We have also completed the design and installation of a background music system in a medical centre. This was a very modern building with a large number of doctors and community nursing staff working from it. There was a specific design requirement here and that was to provide confidentiality. The management of the centre were concerned that certain aspects of the layout meant that patients could be overheard whilst discussing their business with staff. We therefore designed the system to achieve this and this resulted in some unusual speaker layouts! The building is arranged as four zones each with independent volume control. The whole system is based on ADS ceiling speakers and amplification with Mustang controls. (2004)

An advertising agency was looking to equip its boardroom and meeting room with AV facilities. We installed a SonyŽ ceiling mounted projector and ADS speakers to provide even coverage of sound wherever attendees sit. The ADS system mixer amplifier takes PC and AV inputs to feed the speakers and the projector switches between same via its inputs. (2004)
